Mitsubishi Montero Sport CAN bus, decoded
What a 2024 Mitsubishi Montero Sport (4N15 2.4 L diesel, 8-speed automatic; sold as the Pajero Sport in most markets) gives over the CAN bus at its OBD-II port, and how each value decodes. Every signal here was read from the car on 2026-10-18 and checked against something the car or the driver was doing at the time. Other years and markets of the same model likely share much of it, but only this one car was checked.
The port is silent: a gateway sits behind it and nothing is broadcast, at any speed. Everything on this site is a request and an answer at 500 kbit/s with 11-bit ids, so whatever reads it has to transmit. Every request used is a read.
What decodes, at a glance
| Value | Where | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Engine rpm | OBD-II PID 0C from the engine (7E0 → 7E8) |
standard formula, plausible |
| Boost | PID 0B (manifold) minus PID 33 (barometer) |
standard; caps at ~22.5 psi |
| Coolant temperature | PID 05 |
standard, plausible |
| Battery voltage | PID 42 |
standard, plausible |
| Accelerator pedal | PID 49 (not 11, which is the intake throttle) |
standard; 0 off the pedal, 81 % at most on a drive |
| Vehicle speed, load, intake temp, airflow, rail pressure | PIDs 0D 04 0F 10 23 |
standard, plausible |
| Gear, as the dash shows it | transmission 7E1 → 7E9, local id 08, byte 28 (ASCII) |
confirmed P R N D 1 2 |
| Gear engaged | 7E1 local 08, byte 13 |
confirmed P R N 1 2 |
| Gear the box is shifting to | 7E1 local 08, byte 14 |
leads byte 13; to confirm in D |
| Brake pressure | ABS 784 → 785, local 02, bytes 3–4 |
confirmed |
| Brake pedal switch | 784 local 56 byte 0; 773 local 20 byte 1; 7E1 local 06 byte 1 |
confirmed |
| Shift lever position | 728 → 525, local 02, byte 0 |
confirmed |
| Odometer | 763 → 764, local 13, bytes 1–3 |
confirmed against the dash |
| Transmission fluid temperature | 7E1 local 02, byte 5 − 40 |
probable |
| Fuel level | not found | the one guess (763 local 05 byte 12) was wrong |
| Tire pressures | not looked for yet |
“Local id” means Mitsubishi’s own diagnostic read, KWP2000 service 21
(“read data by local identifier”). Byte numbers count from the first data
byte after 61 <id>.

- Talking to the car: the gateway, request formats, multi-frame answers, how fast it answers, and the hardware used.
- Standard OBD-II: which PIDs each ECU supports and how the useful ones decode, with the ranges seen on a drive.
- Mitsubishi local ids: gear, brake, shift lever, odometer and the rest, byte by byte.
- Modules: the 15 modules that answer behind the gateway, their part numbers, and a raw dump of every block each one returned.
- How it was validated: the captures, and what each value read while the driver braked and shifted on cue.
- Still open: fuel level, boost above the cap, gears 3–8, and the rest.
